NAFOWA COMMISSIONS CANCER SCREENING CENTRE IN ABUJA

Another landmark was made in the history of NAFOWA on the 19th of June 2008.  The event was the commissioning of NAFOWA Cancer Screening Centre Abuja, at the NAF Hospital in Abuja.
The former Chief of the Air Staff was the Guest of Honour at the occasion.

In her opening remarks, the former National President of NAFOWA, Mrs. Sade Dike, whose initiative it was to establish the centre, made known the aim of commissioning the centre, which is basically to provide screening services for Cervical Cancer. She said NAFOWA and AWA members will be screened free of charge and members of the public at a subsidized rate.
Other centres will be located in Lagos, Makurdi, Jos and Kaduna.
The Abuja screening centre will concentrate on screening for  Cervical Cancer for now, while screening for other types of Cancer may come up in the future.

An enlightening lecture on Cervical Cancer was given by Dr (Mrs) Grace Nwanna, Consultant Obstetrician/Gynaecologist, 347 NAF Hospital,Jos. She enumerated the risk factors that can endanger one to Cervical Cancer and talked about prevention as well as cures. Her talk was followed by a question and answer session.

All women were encouraged to go for screening.

The Centre was commissioned by the former NAFOWA National President, Mrs Dike, who was later led with other guests, on a tour of the facility, by the Doctor in charge.

Cervical Cancer Campaigns

One of the laudable achievements of Mrs. Sade Dike as the National President in the campaign against Cervical Cancer.

The Campaign against Cervical Cancer by NAFOWA was launched on January 24, 2007 in Abuja. There was need to create awareness amongst women about the killer disease because it can be prevented and women were therefore encouraged to abide by the following rules:

  • Avoid multiple sex partners
  • Stay away from toxic habits (e.g. smoking)
  • Adopt the screening habit i.e. do annual Pap smear.

After the Campaign was launched at the National Level of NAFOWA, the various units and commands were given the mandate to carry the campaigns to their various locations.

It is important to note that the various units and command have embarked on the campaign against Cervical Cancer thereby educating women in their area on the need to examine themselves regularly to ensure that they are free of the disease.
